A stuck relay or door switch.
If it sparks, stop using it. Don’t open the case: the capacitor inside holds a dangerous charge even when unplugged.

Why is my microwave running but not heating?
Usually the magnetron, high-voltage diode or capacitor has failed. These are safe to replace in the workshop or at home by a technician.
Is it safe to use a sparking microwave?
No. Stop using it. Sparking often comes from a burnt waveguide cover, which is cheap to replace if caught early.
Is a microwave worth repairing?
For convection and built-in models, almost always. For small solo models we tell you honestly if a new one makes more sense.
